Monday Post (1-7)

-Played finger game
-Reminder, blogs are 5% of your grade
-Take the blogs seriously, lots of important people (such as scientists) use these
-If you have any questions, ask Mr. Wirth (he can only read your mind to a certain extent)
-Have high quality test corrections for friday
-Retest is 1-14 (must be completed by 1-15) (These dates are subject to change)
-Must complete corrections before retake
-There will be out of class review because we only have two in class review days for the midterm
-Took notes
-Began homework with 14 min left to class

Tuesday 1/08/2008 Notes

Potential Energy

  • We called Potential energy stored energy

  • *Warm up-"what does potential mean to you?"

  • Dictionary Definition: Anything that may be possible

  • Energy that is associated with position

  • Types of forces:

  • Gravitational PE

  • Elastic PE

  • Chemical PE

  • Nuclear PE

  • "Energy is the ability to do work(SON!)"

  • Potential Energy is the possibility to do work

  • Do work on an object to change its potential energy

  • Change in PE=The work required to bring an object from intital to final state

  • Assume no energy lost due to friction

  • Gravitational PE:

  • Energy of height

  • Increases in response to work done

  • Roller coasters, sky diving, skiing, are examples

So that was tuesday pretty much. If anyone has any questions dont hesitiate to not ask me. I have all the notes in my "locker" under my desk. i think this blog thing has some potential to be a good tool if its used right..also has the potential to be pretty funny.

Phyiscs

With the new unit the simple multiplication is easy, but I am not certain when to use the cosine rule. Also, I am interested to see how effective this blog will be because I have never done something like this before.
I'm pretty sure I'm going to need more than two days of review for the midterm

weekend post (b/c we had to)

Just posting since we had to. Comments... this blog is an excellent idea for a higher level course to be quite honest. It has great potential but not so much with this course, there will be times where the blind will be leading the blind in these posts (no offense to anyone). Physics is also a very difficult course to just explain online. If someone doesn't understand something in class, it's most likely going to be harder to understand here. Simply calling a friend or asking others for help would be a much better alternative, so far it has been working for me.

-Monday's Scribe (RJ)
Work = Force Times Distance.
I don't really understand what the dot product is. What does it solve for? What does "dot" mean? Also, all these vocab words and units are becoming hard to remember and not get mixed up.
Not sure if this is what Justin is saying but it is confusing when one equation has to be broken down into another equation in order to solve a problem.
Example from Thursdays homework:
P=W/t
P= (Fd)/t
P= (F)(V)
Obviously substitution isn't avoidable but when doing homework it would be nice to keep track of new equations in the notes... just saying. through post Mr. Wirth

The simple equations i have no problem understanding. It's just taking all of the equations that we learned and somehow every other equation goes into some other equations some how, and all of the variables just randomly come into equations they have no business being in.
